I'm delighted that this short essay / work of creative non-fiction has been published. My great uncle - botanist/biologist/explorer Johannes Elbert - was exploring Kamerun (now Cameroon) when World War I broke out and as the piece recounts, he did not return home safely. In 2024 I attempted to find traces of his and his wife's escape from Kamerun into Spanish Guinea.
I found something else.
